I am a self-made watercolor artist from Aguascalientes, Mexico. I recently discovered my love for painting as I found myself without a job and trying to figure out what to do during the lockdown in 2020.
I started taking online lessons first in Domestika and then in Skillshare with the whole purpose of learning how to pain nebulae. My background is in astronomy and astrophysics, and I have dedicated most of my adult life to the study of the formation and the evolution of the stars. Painting nebulae and galaxies was a natural choice for me. At first I was mainly copying astronomical images from the NASA and ESO sites as it is always easy to find cool pictures for reference, but as I develop my own style, I am starting to incorporate a more fantastic vision of the Universe.
The freedom I found when I am painting is a refreshing contrast with the rigors of the academic life I was used to, and now I am only limited by my imagination. Still, I find myself sometimes analyzing my work deeply or using astronomical software to recreate real night sky views. My favorite software is Stellarium, and I used it extensively to create the backgrounds on the Monuments Collection, based on the orientation of the buildings and the time of the year.
My main goal is to inspire curiosity and share the beauty of the cosmos.
The rest of my time I like to spend it cooking, reading and practicing martial arts!
I am accepting commissions on a regular basis. I like to have a good conversation first to keep the expectations of both parts reasonable, discuss materials, dimensions and price. Please check the commissions page for more information.
The Stars, the Moon, the planets. I paint to wonder what else is out there. To explore the unlimited capacity of creation. Nature is the best gallery.
I started using watercolors just because it was accesible and I didn't need a lot of space to work. I got a basic set, some brushes and a block of paper and I was ready to go. I like to experiment with natural pigments like cochineal and coffee.
PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Guanajuato, Mexico. Thesis on stellar evolution.
My work has been exhibited in the Arts Connection Gallery in Flagstaff and in a private gallery in Sedona, Arizona.
