I painted this image inspired by the Mayan Dresden Codex. This document has survived more than 500 years and is kept in the Library of Dresden in Germany. It contains important data about eclipses, the synodic cycles of Venus and Mars and important dates. On this particular image, the god Chaak is sitting on a snake that has a date assigned to it: 4 Eb, according to their calendar. I couldn't find an equivalent of this date in our modern calendar.
The serpent represents the Long Count, the longest period of time that the Mayas used for dating events, and it has a duration of approximately 34,000 years. The glyphs on the sides of the serpent are numbers. The Mayas possessed an very accurate system to count small numbers and large numbers according to the position of the glyph on the matrix. This knowledge allowed them to keep dates long in the past, and predict events far in the future. I am fascinated by their mathematics and their advanced knowledge in astronomy. I wrote more about this painting on the blog.
