The Horse-head nebula is a deep-sky object difficult to find even with a decent-size telescope. Its name comes from the apparent shape of the head of a horse rising from beneath the clouds. It looks dark because it is very cold and dense, compared to the surrounding medium, and obscures the light from the stars behind it.
