The planet Neptune, with a diamond inside. Watercolor and white ink on paper.
The characteristic blue color of the planet Neptune comes not from water, as it was previously thought, but from the abundance of methane in its atmosphere. It is believed that at some point inside the planet, the methane molecules would break into hydrogen and carbon due to the pressure. As the pressure increases, the carbon would also turn into diamonds. Scientists think this is possible, although it would be extremely difficult to harvest those diamonds.
I imagine not tiny diamonds swirling around but a whole giant diamond in the core, hidden behind the clouds.
I love that I can create this vision with watercolor thanks to its transparency. I added the stormy features with white ink to actually make it look like Neptune, based on pictures taken with space probes.
