Stars are born as the gas in space (mainly hydrogen) collapses and starts nuclear fusion. From a single interstellar cloud many stars can form and start to evolve together as part of a cluster or a multiple system. I have been experiment with textures and mineral pigments from Daniel Smith, and I wanted to show a young triplet of stars, still surrounded by the nebula where they where born. This is not a specific deep-space object, it is more a general view of how I think these systems look like.

On the left side, the stars form a triangle, which is a very harmonious geometrical shape. The star on top is more massive, given that is brighter and is clearing out the gas more rapidly. If you zoom in the image you should notice the texture and the granulation patterns that the black pigment creates, letting the blue and purple pigments show in the background. The mineral pigments creates a very subtle glitter effect that appears as minuscule specs, particularly around the top bright star in the triangle.

I also finished the piece with a splatter of white opaque watercolor to simulate a starry sky in the foreground.

About the stretching process: I soaked the paper in a water tub for several minutes until it reached the texture of leather. On a table I put some paper towels to absorve the water excess and arranged the wooden bars over the paper. I wrapped the paper around the bars and staple it with a heavy duty staple machine. This process makes the paint looks like a canvas. When it dries, the tension in the paper allows it to stay flat, contrary to painting on loose paper. The bars are also a great way to have this paintings ready to hang. The process adds another day of work, but the result is very cool. The bars are about half an inch thick. The frame is light weight, and after applying varnish, it does not needs to protect the watercolor painting with glass.
