Tlatocnochtli is the nahuatl name for the prickly pear cactus, or nopal in Spanish. This is part of the Cochineal collection, four pieces that I made using wild cochineal, a little bug that lives on this kind of cactus. I personally harvested and processed the cochineal to create this piece. It was the only pigment used. In order to obtain three different tones, I added baking soda to create the purple and lime juice to create the bright orange. Some coarse pieces of the pigment are still visible. Wild cochineal on watercolor paper.
